Offline, On Purpose. Online, with a Purpose.

I quitted social media way back 2020

I dislike seeing people way back that are too attached to their cellphones while eating, walking or any kind of activity. I feel like this is understandable since content is everywhere and in the palm of our hands. It eats our time slowly and if it build up then that’s a lot of time wasted.

Many of us would argue the benefits and downside of social media. But in reality, it’s on our own perception how it really benefits us individually. If it does then that’s good for you and if it’s bad then that’s on you. But for me I was in the latter, at the same time it became one of my best decisions in life.

I had enough time to read new books or gain more knowledge rather than mindlessly scrolling through social media with information or memes that aren’t necessary to make me grow. I learned how to cook, I had more time to take care of myself and a lot more.

I entered college (BSIT) as a person who doesn’t use social media.

At the same time, the downsides fall in like I can’t relate to trends that my classmates talk about or I don’t know if there’s a new IT stuff that are better than the ones we are taught in school. Its a list really but this didn’t bother me as long as I perceive it as uniqueness and I can keep growing my career path everyday.

Don’t get me wrong, I still use the internet for articles or references for my schoolwork’s but that exclusively it.

When I graduated and entered the industry, it’s a different ground here. Not only you will compete with people finding jobs from the ones who graduated before you but also the ones who will graduate in the future. Let’s be realistic since we are not competing with just a batch from our school now.

Additionally, in the IT field its also better to be updated with stuff since its technology we are talking about here, its moving really fast.

I had a wakeup call, at this rate I feel like I will be left behind or rather some people who utilize social media will have an advantage in general. Especially in the IT field where online portfolios are a huge advantage. LinkedIn particularly since its a platform for posting your own career and most employers will look at it as well when finding jobs.

That’s where it hit me, if I wanted to level my career I must use social media with a purpose for displaying my career and skills. It’s not that I’m being forced to but rather it also excites me since its about building my career.

The thought of sharing my knowledge and experience also came through my head since I have a way with explanations and how I’ve received comments in my life that I can be a teacher or I’m good at presentations based on how I explain things. It became a vision and a dream at the same time.

In the present time, I use social media mostly to build my career and individual identity in the IT field. It might be hard for me to build from scratch but that won’t stop me from building my career and helping other’s through my knowledge.

Stop social media from using YOU and start using social media for you
